“When I start with an hour of writing, I have a great day.” - Third year junior faculty member

“There are so many great opportunities, I need to prioritize and say “no” to even some good projects. And NO MORE BOOK CHAPTERS!” - Senior faculty member

UNIVERSITY FACULTY

Leaders Don’t Languish, They Publish!

Junior faculty who have not established regular patterns of writing often describe their sixth and seventh years with words such as “overwhelming, stressful,” and even “the worst year of my life.” I support junior faculty to develop the skill-sets necessary to move into a leadership role. This includes:

  1. Developing long and short-term writing and publishing goals that are specific, rather than vague
  2. Making a personal plan for regular, moderate periods of writing
  3. Tuning out self-criticism in the early stages of writing
  4. Using metaphor and visualization to reframe the process for greater effectiveness and enjoyment
  5. Developing social support for writing and scholarship

Senior faculty must juggle competing demands to find time to write. Whether you aspire to lead in your field or to create great programs for the students in your department, a strong publishing record is the key to having an influential role in decision-making. Coaching can give you the skills you need including:

  1. Structuring your time and space to support your writing
  2. Saying “no” to things that take you away from your primary goals.
  3. Overcoming barriers to getting started
  4. Overcoming barriers to finishing
  5. Continuing to build and maintain social support for writing
  6. Reframing the process for greater effectiveness and enjoyment

“After reviewing expectations for promotion with my mentor, the meeting with the chair went smoothly.” - Faculty member at a prominent east coast university

Leaders Achieve Tenure & Promotion

Even with a solid publishing record, tenure and promotion are not guaranteed. Coaching helps faculty to advance by supporting them to:

  1. Gain a clearer picture of formal and informal requirements for promotion in your department and institution
  2. Build professional networks
  3. Navigate academic politics
  4. Learn when to say “yes” and when to say “no”
  5. Set limits kindly but firmly

Leaders Have Influence

Every major university has opinion leaders whose views carry great weight in their field and/or institution. Coaching supports clients to:

  1. Develop their professional voice
  2. Obtain research and program grants
  3. Influence program and department development
  4. Set policy
  5. Do liaison building with other departments and institutions

“My spouse will watch the kids so that I can exercise, but it doesn’t happen if I don’t plan ahead.” - Faculty member at a major research university, and mom of two young children

Leaders Have a Personal & Family Life

For junior faculty, the simultaneous ticking of the tenure clock and the biological clock can make family planning especially stressful. Senior faculty may realize that, despite plans to return to personal interests once they had advanced, they still are not making time for those activities. As your coach I support you to:

  1. Combine family and career with greater ease
  2. Learn to truly relax and enjoy your time off work
  3. Schedule time for fitness and outside interests
