Coaching FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions)

Where and when do we meet? How does payment work?

After a free initial consultation, clients pay a set fee in advance for three or four 45-minute sessions in a month. The sessions take place by telephone at a mutually agreed upon time. The client and coach sometimes also communicate via email between sessions. The fee is inclusive of all coaching services, including email support. Coaching groups are also offered, and are an affordable way to move forward toward goals and broaden your base of support.

Is coaching a short or long-term endeavor?

I customize the coaching to the needs of the client. I have worked with clients for as short a time as six weeks and over as long a period as several years. Most clients make an initial commitment to three months of coaching.

How long will it take to reach my goal?

One client came to coaching because of a psychological block to completing a piece of writing. We worked together to reframe her thinking about that piece, and she surprised herself by finishing in just a few weeks. Another client with a very successful career aspires to be one of the top people in his field. He has continued with coaching over several years because he appreciates the extra edge it gives him. Between those two examples are clients who use coaching to develop new habits and ways of thinking and feel ready to “fly solo” after a six- or twelve-month course of coaching.

How is coaching different from therapy?

Coaching is action oriented. While clients often experience profound learning in coaching, learning in coaching is not just for the sake of understanding – it is always in service of moving forward toward a goal. Coaching sees the client as a whole, healthy person who wants more. Coaching is not psychotherapy. If the coach and client identify depression, anxiety, or other issues that are outside of the scope of coaching, the client is referred out to an appropriate service provider.

What is your training?

I am a graduate of the Mentor Coach Program. Although coaching is distinct from therapy, my years of training and experience as a therapist also gave me excellent preparation for coaching.

What happens during coaching sessions?

The client and coach participate in structured, collaborative conversations. I engage my clients in a variety of coaching methods including assessment, strategizing, visualization, creating structures, metaphor, and more. Incisive questions are also employed to bring clients greater clarity and allow them to move beyond self-imposed limits. Homework assignments are frequently incorporated in order to consolidate learning and allow the client to progress between sessions.

How do I know if you are the right coach for me?

I am glad to do a free consultation to discuss how coaching might help you to reach your goals. You can schedule a consultation by emailing me at rseltzer@aol.com or calling (734) 665-4885.
